The Great Google Search Engine Optimisation Swindle!

By Wayne Moran

In regards to "Search Engine Optimization" usually the best 'tuning' you can do is to ensure that your site has the usual Google tags for search engine optimisation however it really is a misnomer.

A whole industry has sprung up on this notion that you can tune a website to raise your google rankings in search results. What these web development experts don't point out is that the highly paid and sometimes genius Google software engineers are beavering away 24/7 on defeating such 'tuning'.

The popularity of their search engine and the continued success of it is due to their search crawlers effectively ignoring these artificial attempts inflate the 'information importance' of websites.

Google mostly works on a fundamental principle that a website authority on a subject is proportional to how many other websites link to it and how many websites link to those websites linking to your website. Just how far back this goes is a google secret (just like the 11 search herbs and spices with KFC). It is hard to fake links to your website but it is very democratic - you just can't create many 'links' to your site because you don't edit other sites.

Google also ranks higher based on freshness of content, frequency of changing of the information on the website, the age of the website (new websites take a fair while to get on the radar rankings wise). In fact nobody external to google actually knows exactly what are the factors, how the factors are weighted and how the factors interact with each other. Any company that does is lying to you. They can guess but no one truely knows.

Oh and buy the way...google is continually improving the way it does its rankings so what works today won't work as well in faking rankings tomorrow and so on.  Look at this more recent article here. What works 'well' this month won't work anywhere near as well, trick wise, six months from now. At the end of the day if you could fake higher rankings then everybody would be doing it and would make google's search engine useless and more importantly it would render gogole ad words, google main source of revenue, earn less for the company. Google is simply not going to risk that!

Put simply google wants you to use google adwords where you pay a few cents for every person that clicks on your ad taking a surfer to your site. (In the old days you paid depending on how times your ad was 'served' to the surfer - now it is very accountable and you only pay, on an auction type system, for click throughs you actually receive.

Makes sense?

Summary at a glance:

1. Don't beleive the hype from companies saying they can tweak your rankings higher. It might rise your rankings for a while but, as with all 'tricks', they will eventually wear out.
